Computation code

The RRM model Kalypso-NA is a conceptual, deterministic, detailed, non-linear hydrological model. It allows the complete simulation of the land-based part of the global water balance. Starting with pre-settable initial rainfall the essential sub-processes of the water balance can be simulated on the basis of physical processes within the model. By combining the partial models into an overall model, a complete simulation of the land-based water cycle can be done. The outflow of each runoff components, total runoff, groundwater recharge, evapotranspiration and losses on the deep aquifer are calculated for each sub-area individually and for the catchment.

In Kalypso-NA, the incoming parameters of the hydrological processes are described by mathematical equations, which are physically derived. The individual runoff components are collected in consideration of the characteristic flow time after translation and retention and associated to the results of a node in the river network. Based on the system theory, the wave equation is calculated at characteristic nodes of the detailed catchment area. The demarcation of sub regions is essentially based on the topography, the type and shape of the water systems and land use.

The vertical structure of the catchment area is given in the differentiation of the individual runoff components: surface, interflow, basis and groundwater run-off. Taking into account the different processes of vertical and horizontal runoff concentration, run-off hydrographs are calculated at the output of the sub-catchments.

The calculation engine is originally based on the BCENA Code (by Björnsen Consulting Engineers Gmbh)Björnsen program Consulting Engineers, which is continuously developeding in the Institute of River and Coastal EngineeringHydraulic Engineering under the name “Kalypso NA”. The calculation engine can be downloaded from the Kalypso Core Download Center of the Institute of River and Coastal EngineeringHydraulic Engineering:www.kalypso.wb.tu-harburg.de
